What Is Ho’oponopono, Really?

Ho’oponopono is often translated as “to make right,” or “to correct an error.” Traditionally, it was a communal healing practice in Hawaiian culture, used to restore harmony within families and communities when conflict, hurt, or misunderstanding had taken root. Today, it has also evolved into a personal spiritual practice that you can use on your own, anytime, anywhere, to clear emotional tension and come back to your center.

At its core, Ho’oponopono is about responsibility, reconciliation, and release. Rather than getting stuck in blame, resentment, or shame, you consciously choose to tend to what is painful within you, so you can experience more freedom, clarity, and connection. It is both a self-healing tool and a spiritual practice that invites you into a deeper relationship with your own heart, your past, and the people around you.

The Four Phrases at the Heart of This Spiritual Practice

Modern Ho’oponopono is often practiced through four simple phrases. You may have heard them before:

  • I’m sorry.

  • Please forgive me.

  • Thank you.

  • I love you.

Spoken slowly, with intention, these phrases become a kind of meditation. You can direct them toward yourself, another person, a situation, or even a part of your past that still feels unresolved. The power is not in reciting them perfectly, but in allowing them to open your heart and soften the places where you feel tight, guarded, or stuck.

It is believed to have been passed down for centuries and is still practiced today in many parts of the world. The core of this practice is based on the belief that all things and events in life are connected and that we have the power to positively influence our lives and the lives of others through the use of four simple phrases.

I first heard of this practice while reading Get Rich Lucky Bitch by Denise Duffield-Thomas. She encourages readers to practice the steps mentioned below as a tangible step to release previous experiences with poor money management. I did this exercise with all the money mindset stuff I could think of, and felt so much lighter. I now recommend this practice (and the book!) to many of my clients.

As I continued to research this practice, I found that many around the world (therapists, monks, healers) use this, and it is broken down into simple steps.

Ho’oponopono can be divided into four distinct steps, which are based on the belief that each person is responsible for their own thoughts and actions and has the capacity to cleanse and heal themselves. The first step is to recognize that we are all connected, and that we have the power to create and maintain our own inner peace. The second step is to take responsibility for our own thoughts and feelings and to be mindful of the actions we take and the words we speak. The third step is to forgive and release any negative energy that is associated with our thoughts and actions. The fourth and final step is to express gratitude for what we have and for the opportunities that arise from our growth and understanding.

The four simple phrases of Ho’oponopono are “I’m sorry”, “Please forgive me”, “Thank you”, and “I love you”. These phrases are used to cleanse and heal the energy that we carry within ourselves, as well as the energy of those around us. By repeating these phrases, we are able to create a state of inner calm, which can help to enhance our relationships, our physical and mental wellbeing, and our overall quality of life.

Ho’oponopono is a powerful practice that can be used in many different situations. It is a simple and effective way to cleanse our energy and create a state of inner peace. By taking the time to practice Ho’oponopono, we can begin to heal ourselves and our relationships and create positive and lasting change in our lives.
